364/365: National Bicarbonate of Soda Day

Chances are, you’ve got this food item sitting in the back of your refrigerator…but you’d never dream of eating it. At least not plain and out of the box. December 30 is National Bicarbonate of Soda Day!

Seriously? The next to last day of the year is devoted to baking soda?! After so many interesting and unique foods, this is a bit of a letdown. Which is ironic, since its purpose is to help foods rise! Sure, bicarbonate of soda is an important ingredient in many foods. And it’s useful for a variety of non-culinary purposes, as well. It’s just not very sexy or glamorous. Some of the many uses for bicarbonate of soda include:

  • Baking. It helps foods, like breads, rise.
  • Relieves stomach indigestion and heartburn when mixed with water.
  • Removes odors in the refrigerator.
  • It is used in fire extinguishers for grease and oil fires.
  • It is used as a cleaning agent.
  • It can help tenderize meat.
  • You can polish silverware with it.
  • You can brush your teeth with it.

The list goes on and on. Yes, bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) is a useful product. We get it.

To celebrate, we could have eaten almost anything baked. On a whim, I chose Goldfish® crackers. Just seemed like something simple to snack on while we drove from Tonopah to Las Vegas. Plus, they’re the snack that smiles back. How could I resist? 🙂
